What is Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia?
Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML) is a cancer that begins in the bone marrow and then spreads to the blood. This rare cancer affects around 1,100 people in the US each year. CMML was first classified as a unique blood cancer in 2001. Prior to that it was classified as a myelodysplastic/
What is the Connection between Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia and Benzene?
Years of low-level exposure to benzene is a cause of CMML. Benzene-containing products like brake cleaners, automotive parts washers, fuels, and printing inks and washes have been known to cause cell mutations that can result in CMML and other forms of leukemia. Doctors treat CMML and MDS nearly the same. There are only a few published studies on the causes of CMML. This is due to the fact that CMML was just recently classified separate from MDS/MPN. There is no dispute that benzene causes myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
How is CMML Treated?
There are several options for the treatment of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, including chemotherapy, radiation, and stem cell transplants. The type of treatment available to patients is dependent on factors like the severity of the disease and the patient’s age. CMML has also, in a few cases, developed as a result of chemotherapy and radiation treatments for other cancers.
