Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia and Benzene Exposures

What is Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia?

Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a cancer that begins in the bone marrow and then spreads to the blood. APL is a rare subtype of acute myeloid leukemia (AML).  This rare cancer affects less than 1,000 Americans annually. Studies related specifically to acute promyelocytic leukemia are limited given that there are so few cases.

What is the Connection between Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia and Benzene?

There are more than 20,000 cases of AML each year. There are also tens of thousands of  cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) annually. Studies of these leukemias do show a causal connection to benzene exposures.  Benzene-containing products including gasoline, printing inks and press washes, brake and carburetor cleaners, automotive parts washers, and paint thinners cause cell mutations that can result in the development of leukemia.

    How is APL Treated?

There are several options for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia, including chemotherapy, radiation, and stem cell transplants. Most treatment begins with induction therapy, or chemotherapy. This is then followed by a targeted drug therapy. These treatments may bring patients into remission. Success rates are constantly increasing.  The type of treatment available to patients is dependent on factors like the severity of the disease and the patient’s age.

What are some Symptoms of APL?

    • Bleeding from any site, including gums and nosebleeds

    • Difficulty moving your arms and legs, due to bleeding in the brain

    • Fever, loss of appetite, and fatigue
